Screens, 2000

In Screens the tension between the two mediums of television and 8mm film is explored. Portions of home
movies are juxtaposed with television footage from an episode of “Cheers” in which a home movie has been
created by the characters of the TV show. The six minute unedited footage from the once popular television
program is shown in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, resembling the “picture in picture” control
that most new televisions come equipped with. In the bottom corner of this piece, the “gang of Cheers” is
shown watching themselves on a movie screen while the viewer’s attention is divided between the TV show
and the mundane film clips that lay behind.
